Top Border is a great way to visually organize your model. It is actually the most common of the border shortcuts used as it is the border of choice to create a "calculation bar" for vertical calculations. This is because you more often draw the border line after you calculate a result and you are already on the calculation line when this happens. Additionally, if you add a row above the calculation line, the border will stay with the calculation line versus moving with the row above the calculation line. In this way you limit the number of times you have to reformat your model with the Top Border shortcut. In this article, I will show you how to activate this feature in Google Sheets by shortcut, just like you would in Excel


The most common shortcut for Top Border in Excel is Alt + H + B + P. You can use this shortcut in Google Sheets by pressing & releasing Alt + H + B + P one after the other

Steps for Top Border:

  1. Install the SheetWhiz Chrome Extension for free

  2. Refresh a Google Sheet and login when prompted. The SheetWhiz logo will appear in the upper right hand corner of the screen

  3. Select the area you'd like to apply a Top Border to and then hit Alt + H + B + P. Make sure you press and release each key before pressing the next key, just like you would in Excel

    1. If you are on a Mac, use Option + H + B + P as there is no Alt key on the Mac keyboard

  4. In summary, the Top Border Shortcut:

    1. Alt + H + B + P (PC)

    2. Option + H + B + P (Mac)

  5. [Optional] Furthermore, you can change the Top Border shortcut to a more convenient shortcut by clicking the button in the SheetWhiz menu and changing the key
